Animation Workshops: eLearning for Animation Studies
Current research in the related areas of visual communication, invention and cognition acknowledges that there are key issues related to emerging learner – centred environments. In parallel with these developments, Visual Communication Design graduates seeking a career in the area of animation are faced with tremendous competition for places in studios and production houses globally. Problems are particularly identified with the pedagogic delivery of essential traditional-based animation skills that can effectively interface in an electronic media environment.
This paper details the substantive research and consultation between academics and industrial partners resulting in the design, development and implementation of the pioneering program Animation Workshops, designed by animators John Grace and Andrew Chong (Loughborough University) and funded by the European Social Fund. This paper examines the role and context of producing animation learning and assessment systems delivered by using an online technology package, designed through specific research methodology to encourage student participation and learning in both an exciting and efficient way. The outcomes of the research project are illustrated by showcasing the work of some Visual Communication Design undergraduate students who have used Animation Workshops as a successful springboard for careers in the discipline. The paper provides research conclusions to the Animation Workshops project and suggests identified improvements to the delivery of international eLearning systems for students studying Visual Arts disciplines.
